A unique spectacle
Kathakali, an incomparable classical art form from God’s own country, andYakshagana, a lofty traditional art form emanating from the soil of Karnataka, must have had intimate kinship since the days of Parthi Subha. How about an opportunity to watch these two art forms on the same stage in the same light interpreting the same motif almost 450 hundred years later?
Kathakkali and Yakshagana, A rare juxtaposition of two great sister art forms in the light shed by the flickering flames of burning torches. The Kathakali exponent of international repute, Padmashree Kalamandalam Gopi Asan leads his well-acclaimed troupe to present an incredible feast of Kathakali performance on ‘Dussasana Vadham. This is followed by a bewitching spectacle of the southern style of Yakshagana on the same theme by theatre Yaksha, Udupi in association with the finest select senior Thenkuthittu artistes.
Kathakkali
Kathakali (Malayalam: കഥകളി, kathakaḷi) is a stylised classical Indian dance-drama noted for the attractive make-up of characters, elaborate costumes, detailed gestures and well-defined body movements presented in tune with the anchor playback music and complementary percussion. It originated in the country’s present day state of Kerala during the 17th century and has developed over the years with improved looks, refined gestures and added themes besides more ornate singing and precise drumming. The themes of the Kathakali are religious in nature. This is performed in a text which is generally Sanskritised Malayalam.

Yakshagana
Yakṣagāna (ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನ) is a folk theater form that combines dance, music, dialogue, costume, make-up, and stage techniques with a unique style and form. This folk theater style is mainly found in the coastal districts and the Malenadu region of Karnataka, India. It is traditionally presented from dusk to dawn. Yakshagana literally means the song (gana) of the yaksha, (nature spirits). It is the scholastic name (used for the last 200 years) for art forms formerly known as kēḷike, āṭa, bayalāṭa, and daśāvatāra. It is believed to have evolved from pre-classical music and theater during the period of the Bhakti movement.
