Gender and Public Space was one of the themes for the call for papers from young scholars as part of the ‘Institutions and Public Policy’ conference. This is an important emergent research area and a key engagement in CBPS. This session attempts to address and build on the existing conversations around understanding what public space means and entails, especially for the diverse stakeholders under gender; the politics of public space is a reflection of who we are and determines what public space is.
Tanya Rana from Accountability Initiative at the Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi, presents a paper on the need-analysis of safety facilities by highlighting the serious gap and underestimation of financing these facilities for the victims of violence.
Krishna Panchal from the Society for Women’s Action and Training Initiative (SWATI) in Gujarat focuses on the collective experiences of girls and young women in public spaces of rural Gujarat by shedding light on their restricted mobility due to fear and perceived fear.
Mansi Singh, Centre for Law and Policy Research, presents an overview of the state’s engagement with the discourse on gender identity at large with a special focus on the identity of trans persons.
Tanushka Sharma and Raghavi Purimetla from CBPS talk about understanding the creation of safe spaces within public spaces through the formation of ‘familiar publics’
